In our last post, we discussed a recent study showing that the numbers of sports-related concussions for young people, student athletes in particular, have risen dramatically over the last ten years. In this post, we want to provide a little more information about concussions as an injury and what you need to know about recognizing and dealing with these serious injuries.
According to Dr. Mark Halstead, a co-author of new guidelines and recommendations to be published in the September issue of Pediatrics, "a concussion is an injury to the brain that is typically not a structural injury but a functional injury." What that means is that a concussion is an injury that seems to affect brain function, even if it doesn't result in a physical injury.
